Essentials of Faith

What is Islam?

"Indeed, the religion in the sight of Allah is Islam." (Quran 3:19)

Islam is more than just a religion; it is a comprehensive way of life that provides guidance for every aspect of human existence, from the spiritual to the social.

1. The Meaning of Islam

The word Islam is derived from the Arabic root 'S-L-M', which means peace, submission, and surrender. Spiritually, Islam means the voluntary submission of one's will to the Will of Allah (God). A person who practices Islam is called a Muslim, meaning "one who submits to God."

2. Core Beliefs (Iman)

At the heart of Islam are several fundamental beliefs that Every Muslim holds dear:

3. The Five Pillars of Islam

The practice of Islam is built upon five foundational acts of worship:

1. Shahada (Faith)

The declaration of faith: "There is no god but Allah, and Muhammad is His messenger."

2. Salah (Prayer)

Performing the five daily prayers at dawn, noon, afternoon, sunset, and night.

3. Zakat (Charity)

Giving a portion of one's wealth to assist the poor and needy.

4. Sawm (Fasting)

Fasting during the holy month of Ramadan from dawn until dusk.

5. Hajj (Pilgrimage)

Making the journey to the Kaaba in Makkah at least once in a lifetime for those who are able.

4. Islam as a Message of Peace

Despite modern misconceptions, the core of Islamic teaching is to bring harmony to the individual and society. By aligning one's life with Divine laws, a person finds inner peace and contributes to the well-being of the surrounding community. Ethics, justice, and compassion are central to the Islamic identity.
